DONALD TRUMP CONFIRMS PLANS FOR INDYCAR RACE IN WASHINGTON D.C. IN 2026
Plans are confirmed for an IndyCar street race in Washington, D.C. in 2026, something that first sounded unlikely but is now official.
U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to create the “Freedom 250,” an IndyCar race planned for August 21–23, 2026. The race would be held around the National Mall as part of celebrations for the United States’ 250th anniversary. Trump shared an AI-made video of cars racing past famous landmarks and said the event would be free for the public.
The Department of Transportation and the Department of the Interior will work with IndyCar to design the track and help fund the event. Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said the race will boost tourism and help local businesses by bringing visitors to the city.
Roger Penske, owner of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and leader of Team Penske, attended the signing and said the race will bring over 100 years of IndyCar history to the nation’s capital. FOX Sports CEO Eric Shanks also supported the event, crediting government leaders for helping save the race.
Organizing the race will be difficult due to security, tight timing, and limits on advertising on federal land. Even so, officials believe the Freedom 250 could draw record crowds and become a major national event.
