DRIVER ANALYSIS FROM INDYCAR ROUND AT PHOENIX: WHO EXCEEDED EXPECTATIONS?

The IndyCar Series made its long-awaited return to Phoenix Raceway for the first time since 2018, and the race did not disappoint. Across 250 intense laps, drivers delivered relentless wheel-to-wheel action, producing an astonishing 564 overtakes. It was a spectacle of speed, strategy, and nerve.

Standout Performances in Arizona

Among the field, several drivers clearly distinguished themselves with impressive performances, notably Josef Newgarden, Pato O’Ward, and Graham Rahal.

Josef Newgarden

Josef Newgarden, the so called king of short ovals, enjoyed what could only be described as a dream weekend in Arizona. The Team Penske driver started strong by qualifying second and quickly established himself as a serious contender for victory. Early in the race he engaged in an intense battle with David Malukas for the lead, setting the tone for a highly competitive event.

The decisive moment came later when a clash between Christian Rasmussen and Will Power resulted in damage for both drivers, opening the door for Newgarden to take control of the race. From there, he managed the situation expertly and secured a well-earned victory at the very end. The result gives Newgarden valuable momentum as the season progresses.

Pato O’Ward

Pato O’Ward also left Phoenix with plenty to be satisfied about. The Arrow McLaren driver outqualified both of his teammates and spent much of the race fighting among the front-runners. Demonstrating consistent pace and strong racecraft, O’Ward remained competitive throughout the event and ultimately finished fourth.

While he narrowly missed the podium, his performance confirmed his status as one of the drivers capable of challenging for top results this season. The upcoming race at the new Arlington circuit will offer another opportunity for O’Ward to continue this positive form.

Graham Rahal

Few would have predicted such a strong weekend for veteran Graham Rahal, yet the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing driver delivered one of his most impressive performances in recent memory. Rahal secured third place in qualifying, one of his best grid positions in quite some time, demonstrating excellent pace over a single lap.

Although race pace proved slightly more challenging, Rahal maintained a solid performance and finished ninth. Combined with teammate Mick Schumacher qualifying just behind him, it was an encouraging weekend for the team overall.

Drivers Who Fell Short of Expectations

While some drivers excelled, others endured difficult weekends marked by mistakes, incidents, or a lack of pace. Among the most disappointing performances were those of Alex Palou, Christian Rasmussen, and Felix Rosenqvist.

Alex Palou

For reigning champion Alex Palou, Phoenix was a race to forget. The Spaniard struggled from the beginning of the weekend, managing only tenth place in qualifying and showing limited pace during the practice sessions.

His race came to an abrupt end after a restart following a caution triggered by rookie Dennis Hauger’s dramatic save. Palou failed to notice Rinus VeeKay on the outside line and made contact with the wall, forcing him to retire from the race. While VeeKay escaped without damage, the incident ended Palou’s hopes of salvaging points from a difficult weekend.

Christian Rasmussen

Christian Rasmussen had an optimal race, until… The Ed Carpenter Racing driver displayed impressive consistency throughout the race and was firmly in contention for victory.

However, his promising run came to a sudden halt after contact with Will Power. The collision caused a puncture for Power and suspension damage for Rasmussen, sending the Danish driver down the order. Officials classified the incident as a racing incident, but without that moment Rasmussen looked likely to secure at least a podium finish.

Felix Rosenqvist

Felix Rosenqvist endured one of the most difficult weekends of any driver in the field. A heavy crash during the opening practice session severely disrupted his preparation and prevented him from participating in qualifying.

Although he returned to the track during the final practice session, the limited track time left him lacking confidence in the car. During the race, Rosenqvist struggled to find rhythm and pace, making it a weekend with very few positives to take away.

Looking Ahead

Phoenix delivered exactly what fans had hoped for: nonstop action, dramatic incidents, and standout performances. With the championship battle already taking shape, the series now heads to Arlington, Texas, where a brand-new circuit awaits the drivers.

If Phoenix was any indication, the upcoming race promises even more excitement as the season continues to unfold.
