INDYCAR RETURNS AT BARBER AS KIRKWOOD LEADS OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP BATTLE

The 2026 IndyCar Series resumes after a short break with the Grand Prix of Alabama, held at the Barber Motorsports Park. This race marks the fourth round of the season and closes a very busy start to the year.

So far, the championship has seen three different winners in three races, with Alex Palou, Josef Newgarden, and Kyle Kirkwood each taking victory, showing how competitive the field is. Teams like Chip Ganassi Racing, Team Penske, and Andretti Autosport have all made strong starts, while Arrow McLaren is still searching for its first win.

Kirkwood comes into this weekend as the championship leader after a very consistent start. His recent win has given him a clear advantage over Palou, while drivers like Pato O’Ward and Newgarden remain close enough to stay in the fight. Scott McLaughlin and David Malukas have also shown strong pace and could play an important role as the season continues.

Historically, Barber has been a good track for several drivers. Newgarden has enjoyed a lot of success here in the past, while McLaughlin has won the last two editions. Palou also has great memories at this circuit, as it was the place of his first IndyCar win, and he has since repeated that success. O’Ward is another name to keep in mind, having already won at this track.

On the other hand, Scott Dixon has never managed to win at Barber despite his long and successful career. Even though he has finished on the podium many times, victory has always escaped him here, and his current form does not suggest an easy turnaround.

The circuit itself is one of the most technical on the calendar. With constant elevation changes and a series of fast corners, it requires precision and confidence from the drivers. Overtaking is not easy, with the best chance coming under braking into Turn 6. The limited runoff areas also mean that mistakes can be costly.

Strategy will likely play a key role in the race. Teams are expected to follow a three-stop plan, but this could change depending on race conditions. Tire management will also be important, especially with the softer compounds, which may behave differently over long runs this season.
