MARCUS ERICSSON TAKES HISTORIC FIRST POLE POSITION IN INDYCAR
Qualifying for the IndyCar race was full of surprises, mistakes, and close lap times. In the end, Marcus Ericsson took pole position, his first in IndyCar and his first pole in any series since 2013.
Group 1: Palou Leads the First Session
The first group started with drivers like Josef Newgarden, Mick Schumacher, Alexander Rossi and championship star Alex Palou.
Most drivers began their first run on hard tires. Only Rossi and Rasmussen chose the faster soft tires early. Palou quickly set the fastest lap with a 1:34.654.
Later, drivers switched to soft tires for a faster second run. Palou improved his time even more, despite being slowed by traffic. Felix Rosenqvist moved into second place.
The six drivers advancing to the Fast 12 were:
- Alex Palou
- Felix Rosenqvist
- Alexander Rossi
- Josef Newgarden
- Rasmussen
- Marcus Ericsson
Drivers like Schumacher, Romain Grosjean and Rinus VeeKay were eliminated.
Group 2: Red Flag Drama

The second group included drivers such as David Malukas, Pato O’Ward, Scott Dixon and Will Power.
Malukas set the first fast lap with a 1:34.404, but the session soon changed when Scott McLaughlin crashed into the wall. The red flag stopped the session, and because he caused it, McLaughlin had to start last.
Mclaughlin, together with Kirkwood and Palou, was one of the greatest contenders for pole position in Arlington.
When the session restarted, drivers had one last chance. Power managed a strong lap and reached the top six.
Drivers advancing to the Fast 12 were:
- Kirkwood
- Malukas
- Ferrucci
- Armstrong
- Will Power
- Pato O’Ward
Fast 12: Big Names Eliminated
In the Fast 12 round, Palou made a mistake on his first lap and damaged his tires with a flat spot. At first he was only seventh.
Meanwhile, O’Ward set a strong lap of 1:34.520, and Kyle Kirkwood briefly looked very fast even after touching the wall.
On the final attempts, Palou recovered with an impressive 1:33.404, the fastest lap of the session.
The drivers advancing to the Fast 6 were:
- Alex Palou
- Pato O’Ward
- Felix Rosenqvist
- Will Power
- Marcus Armstrong
- Marcus Ericsson
Surprisingly, no drivers from Team Penske reached the final round.
Fast 6: One Lap Shootout
The Fast 6 format allowed only one lap per driver.
Ericsson was the first driver on track and set a 1:34.356. At the time, it did not look fast enough for pole. Marcus Armstrong followed but could not match the time. Will Power and Rosenqvist also fell short. O’Ward got close with 1:34.845, but he was still behind Ericsson.
Finally, Palou attempted the last lap of qualifying. Many expected him to take pole after his strong earlier pace, but he finished four tenths slower than Ericsson.
Ericsson’s Surprise Pole

That result gave Marcus Ericsson a surprise pole position. It was his first IndyCar pole and his first pole in any racing series since 2013.
After a dramatic qualifying session with crashes, mistakes, and changing conditions, the Swedish driver will start the race from the very front of the grid.
