OPEL TO JOIN FORMULA-E FROM GEN4
Opel will enter Formula E next season with its own team, becoming the third German entry on the grid alongside Porsche’s two factory teams. The move is part of a wider plan by the Stellantis group to reorganize its motorsport programs and focus more on electric racing.
The brand has secured an official entry licence, allowing it to compete as a full factory team. This will make Opel the first standalone Formula E team fully backed by Stellantis. Its arrival could help bring the grid up to 24 cars, depending on whether all current teams remain in the championship.
Porsche acquired the license for a second factory team after NEOM Mclaren left the series. We now await for the confirmation from Penske on whether they will continue in the series, as they were partnering DS.
Opel says it has been considering Formula E for around two years, but believes the upcoming Gen4 era is the right time to join. The company wants to use the series to support its push toward electric mobility and strengthen the image of its performance EV lineup.
Motorsport has always been an important part of Opel’s identity. In the past, the brand has competed in series like Formula 3, touring cars, and DTM, and even ran a junior single-seater championship that helped develop drivers such as Mika Häkkinen and Rubens Barrichello.
More recently, Opel has focused on electric rallying, where it gained experience with EV technology. This background is seen as a natural step toward joining Formula E.
The new team will be led by Jörg Schrott, Opel’s head of motorsport, who has been involved in the company’s racing activities for over a decade.
Opel’s entry also comes as the brand continues its transition toward electric cars. While it once planned to go fully electric in Europe by 2028, it has since adjusted its strategy and will continue producing some combustion engine models alongside EVs.
