MÁRQUEZ HANDED LONG LAP PENALTY AFTER SPRINT INCIDENT AT COTA

Marc Márquez has received a long lap penalty for the main race at the Grand Prix of the Americas after an incident during Saturday’s Sprint.

The penalty was given after Márquez caused a crash involving Fabio Di Giannantonio. The contact happened under braking into Turn 12, when Márquez tried to overtake but hit Di Giannantonio, forcing him to fall and retire from the race.

Race officials reviewed the incident and decided that Márquez was responsible, giving him a long lap penalty, which usually costs around three seconds during the race.

Márquez will start Sunday’s race from sixth position on the grid. Despite the penalty, he will still hope to recover positions and fight at the front on a track where he has been very strong in the past.
