JORGE MARTIN WINS DRAMATIC AUSTRIAN MOTOGP SPRINT - Motorsportsclicks

Jorge Martin won a dramatic MotoGP Sprint at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, recovering from eighth place on the opening lap to take victory. The Aprilia rider benefited from Pedro Acosta’s late crash, but also produced a strong comeback through the field to beat Marc Marquez and Marco Bezzecchi to the finish. The result put Martin back into the championship lead by three points over Marquez.

Martin started the Sprint from pole position after beating Marquez by just 0.015 seconds in qualifying. Acosta completed the front row in third, only 0.071 seconds behind Martin. The three riders were separated by less than one tenth of a second, setting up another important battle in the championship fight.

The start immediately changed the order. Martin went slightly wide at Turn 1, allowing Marquez to attack him into the Turn 2 chicane. The two riders battled hard, with Martin losing several positions and ending the opening lap in eighth place. Acosta took advantage of the fight and moved into the lead after Marquez also went slightly wide at Turn 3.

Acosta quickly created a gap at the front, while Martin started his recovery. The Aprilia rider passed Brad Binder, Francesco Bagnaia, Ai Ogura and Alex Marquez before reaching fourth place by Lap 5. He then passed his teammate Bezzecchi at Turn 1 on Lap 7 to move into third.

One lap later, Martin attacked Marc Marquez at Turn 1. The move allowed him to take second place and put him directly behind Acosta. At that point, Acosta was around 2.8 seconds ahead, and Martin appeared to have little time left to close the gap during the 14-lap Sprint.

The race changed completely with three laps remaining. Acosta lost the front of his KTM at Turn 2 and crashed while leading by almost three seconds. It was an unforced mistake that ended what had looked like a controlled victory for the KTM rider. Acosta was able to remount, but later retired from the Sprint.

Martin inherited the lead and completed the final laps without losing control of the race. He took his 20th MotoGP Sprint victory and moved three points clear of Marquez in the championship standings. Marquez finished second, while Bezzecchi completed the podium for Aprilia.

The result was also important for Bezzecchi, who finished third and continued his strong run in Sprint races. The Italian rider had now reached the podium in four consecutive MotoGP weekends, according to the race report.

Ai Ogura finished fourth on the Trackhouse Aprilia on his return from injury. The Japanese rider finished ahead of Alex Marquez, who took fifth, while Francesco Bagnaia improved to sixth after a difficult start to the Austrian weekend. Johann Zarco was seventh for LCR Honda, followed by Fermin Aldeguer and Brad Binder, who took the final championship point.

Fabio Di Giannantonio finished tenth for VR46, ahead of Enea Bastianini, Fabio Quartararo and Luca Marini. Franco Morbidelli was the only other retirement after crashing at Turn 2 around the halfway point of the Sprint.

Martin’s victory gave him 286 points in the championship, three more than Marquez. Bezzecchi remained third in the standings, while Acosta left the Sprint without points after his crash. The result added another major change to a title fight that had already seen the lead move between Martin and Marquez during the previous rounds.

The Austrian Sprint also set up an important Sunday race. Acosta had shown strong pace throughout the weekend, including the fastest time in Friday practice and third place in qualifying, while Martin and Marquez continued their direct battle for the championship lead.
