FORMULA 1 REVEALS 2027 CALENDAR WITH RECORD 10 SPRINT RACES
Formula 1 has officially revealed the 2027 calendar, with the FIA World Motor Sport Council approving a schedule made up of 24 Grands Prix across 22 countries and a record 10 Sprint events. The season will begin in Bahrain on March 14 and finish in Abu Dhabi on December 12.
Bahrain will open the championship again, with the race taking place on March 12-14. Saudi Arabia will follow one week later in Jeddah, creating an opening double-header in the Middle East. Before the season begins, teams will complete a four-day pre-season test in Bahrain from February 24 to 27.
The biggest change to the 2027 calendar is the increase in Sprint events. Formula 1 will have 10 Sprint weekends, compared with six in 2026. Bahrain, Australia, Japan, Monaco and Abu Dhabi will host a Sprint for the first time, while Canada, Great Britain, Italy, Brazil and Qatar will continue to host the format.
Monaco will be one of the most notable Sprint weekends because the famous street circuit will host the format for the first time. The weekend will include two qualifying sessions, with Sprint Qualifying replacing the usual second practice session.
Formula 1 says the Sprint programme is being expanded because of the popularity of the format. According to F1’s data, Sprint weekends have recorded 12% higher total viewership than weekends without a Sprint, while 82% of spectators attending Sprint events say the format adds value to their ticket.
The European season will begin with Monaco before Formula 1 returns to Portugal. The Portuguese Grand Prix will take place at Portimão from June 18 to 20, marking the country’s return to the calendar after last hosting F1 in 2021. Portugal has signed a two-year agreement for 2027 and 2028.
Türkiye will also return to Formula 1 in 2027. Istanbul Park will host the Turkish Grand Prix from October 1 to 3, between the Azerbaijan and Singapore Grands Prix. Türkiye has agreed a five-year deal that will keep the race on the calendar through 2031.
The 2027 calendar also sees changes to the order of several European races. Silverstone will follow Portugal, with Austria and Belgium coming later before the summer break. The championship will return in September with Monza followed by the Spanish Grand Prix at Madring.
The final part of the season will take Formula 1 to the United States, Mexico, Brazil and Las Vegas before the championship returns to the Middle East. Qatar will host the penultimate round from December 3 to 5, followed by Abu Dhabi from December 10 to 12 for the season finale.
