COLTON HERTA RUMOURED TO RACE IN FORMULA 2

The latest rumours in the Indycar paddock indicate that Andretti driver Colton Herta could be racing in Formula 2 in 2026, in order to get the superlicence to race in Formula 1 in the future.

The news come from Indycar journalist Nathan Brown, suggesting that Andretti would move Herta to the Formula 1 Feeder series, leaving an empty seat in the American team, that would be fulfilled by soon-to-be free agent Will Power, or IndyNXT champion Dennis Hauger.

TWG Motorsports, partner of Cadillac in Formula 1 and owner of Andretti Global, would have liked an American driver in its line-up for the debuting season in Formula 1, with Colton Herta being the closest one, there were high hopes for his Indycar season to go well, he needed to finish 5th in the 2025 Indycar standings in order to have the 40 points of the superlicence.

Lacking superlicence points

However, Herta does not have any possibility to finish higher than 6th, and his position is being threatened, meaning he could end the season 11th.

A season plenty of poor results have denied Herta of any possibilities to debut in Formula 1 next year. The Andretti driver is still winless, with only two podiums and several results out of the top 15, committing some mistakes in qualifying sessions as well, such as in last weekend’s Milwaukee Mile.

If Herta finishes the 2025 season placed 6th in the Indycar standings, his superlicence points will add up to 38, two less than required to race in Formula 1.

Therefore, Cadillac has confirmed their line-up with two experienced drivers for 2026, with Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Pérez coming back from a stop.

Could Formula 2 be the solution?

Therefore, Andretti thinks that, perhaps the best move for Herta in order to get the two remaining points would be by racing in Formula 2 in the 2026 season, where he would need to finish only 10th.

Rumours also indicate that the proposal is already included in his contract, with a yearly $8M salary. In case his journey in the Formula 1 Feeder Series is not successful, he would return to Indycar in 2027 with Andretti.

Colton Herta was asked about the rumours by Indycar Journalist Nathan Brown, and the American told him: “These are just rumours, nothing more at the moment.”

The 26-year-old did not deny any rumour, therefore we could see another American debuting in Formula 2 in 2026, trying to make his way into the pinnacle of Motorsport.
