CRAWFORD STORMS INTO POLE IN A CHAOTIC FORMULA 2 QUALIFYING SESSION
Jak Crawford has set pole position at Baku for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, ahead of the Italian pair Leonardo Fornaroli and Gabriele Mini.
The session was initially delayed slightly due to a track issue that saw the Formula 1 Free Practice 1 interrupted by almost half of the session.
The first times at the top were quite slow, as drivers were lapping between low 56s and high 55s, as Alexander Dunne went immediately into P1.
However, his team mate Amaury Cordeel lost the rear end of his car in turn 13 and clipped the wall, ending his session prematurely.
As the drivers got back into the track, everyone tried to set a lap as fast as possible in order to avoid finishing the session at the back of the grid, in case another red flag came out.
In a train of slipstream, Jak Crawford set the fastest lap in 1:54.791, with championship leader Fornaroli 20 milliseconds behind, with the other Italian Mini 3 tenths slower in third.
Victor Martins sit fourth ahead of Alexander Dunne and runner-up Luke Browning. Richard Verschoor struggled to set a lap and went to P13 behind Rafael Villagomez.
Alexander Dunne clipped the wall in the castle section and had a minor damage in the right front suspension, but the Rodin team did not take much to fix it.
With 4 minutes left on the clock, Victor Martins has wrecked his car by crashing into turn 3, and will most likely lose his lap, that put him on P4, for being the sole cause of a red flag.
As the session restarted, Alex Dunne was improving his lap, and it was putting him on pole, but Roman Stanek and John Bennett caused another red flag by crashing in turn 1, and with one minute to go, the session did not resume.
Roman Stanek left the track at turn 1 and unsafely rejoined on the racing line, where he found John Bennett on his push lap. The Czech driver might lose his lap as well for causing a red flag, meaning he would drop out of the top 10.
Rookie Martinius Stenshorne, who is debuting in FIA Formula 2 this weekend with Trident, has put himself in P8, and it could become a P7, if Martins’ second fastest lap is slow enough to drop him four positions, as his fastest lap will get deleted due to causing a red flag.
Many drivers are under investigation for session breaches. We will keep you updated for further penalties later today. The Sprint race gets underway on Saturday at 14:15 Local time.
