FIRST INDYCAR RACE OF THE YEAR: DRIVER ANALYSIS FROM ST. PETE

IndyCar returned to action after a six-month break with a exciting season opener on the streets of St. Petersburg, Florida. The first round of the 2026 campaign delivered drama, surprises, and standout performances. Here are the tops and flops from the opening weekend.

The Standout Performers in St. Pete

Several drivers delivered impressive results, but three names rose above the rest: Alex Palou, Dennis Hauger, and Josef Newgarden. Let’s take a closer look at why they stood out.

Alex Palou

Alex Palou once again proved why he is one of the benchmark drivers in the series. The Spaniard qualified fourth, just one tenth of a second away from pole position. A flawless strategy overcutting his rivals combined with exceptional race pace allowed him to secure his first victory of the 2026 season.

It was a commanding and mature performance from Palou, who is clearly determined to pursue what would be his fifth IndyCar title.

Dennis Hauger

Few expected such a strong debut weekend from rookie Dennis Hauger at Dale Coyne Racing. The Norwegian not only scored points on his first IndyCar start by finishing tenth, but he also made it into the Fast Six during qualifying.

Hauger secured third place on the grid, just three hundredths of a second behind Scott McLaughlin in P1. After a difficult 2025 season, Dale Coyne Racing enjoyed a dream result in St. Petersburg, with Romain Grosjean also finishing in the points in eighth place. Overall, it was an outstanding weekend for the team, with hopes of replicating this level of performance in the coming rounds.

Josef Newgarden

Josef Newgarden’s weekend in Florida seemed destined for disappointment after a crash in FP1 and a costly mistake in qualifying that left him starting from a disappointing 23rd position.

However, the Penske driver delivered a remarkable recovery drive, climbing all the way to seventh place and earning the title of Biggest Mover. Considering how Friday and Saturday unfolded, his performance on race day was nothing short of impressive.

The First Flops of 2026

On the other side of the spectrum, several drivers failed to meet expectations. Will Power, Christian Rasmussen, and Sting Ray Robb endured difficult weekends for different reasons.

Will Power

It remains unclear what went wrong for the new Andretti driver, but the weekend proved to be a struggle from start to finish. A heavy crash in Turn 10 during Saturday’s practice session was followed by a disappointing qualifying result, where he could only manage 13th.

A minor but damaging contact with the wall at the same corner during the race led to a suspension failure and forced his retirement. The result represents a significant loss of championship points and could affect his confidence heading into the next rounds.

Christian Rasmussen

It was a weekend to forget for Ed Carpenter Racing. Both drivers struggled to achieve competitive results, and Rasmussen ultimately finished last despite showing reasonable promise in qualifying.

A clear lack of race pace defined his afternoon, and the team will need to respond quickly ahead of the next round in Arizona.

Sting Ray Robb

Sting Ray Robb endured one of the toughest weekends of the field. He trailed his new teammate Rinus VeeKay throughout the event and could only qualify twentieth.

During the race, he locked up under braking at the start and took out both Santino Ferrucci and Mick Schumacher in a single incident. Robb later retired, bringing an early end to a disappointing weekend. Significant improvement will be required if he hopes to make an impact this season.

The opening race of the 2026 IndyCar season delivered excitement, unexpected performances, and early championship implications. Next round is scheduled for March 7th already as Indycar returns to Phoenix’s spectacular oval.
