VERSTAPPEN CRASHED IN Q1 DUE TO A SOFTWARE ISSUE
Max Verstappen crashed in Q1 during qualifying for the 2026 Formula 1 season opener in Melbourne, and it was caused by a software problem in his car.
According to Red Bull technical director Pierre Wache, the issue made the rear of the car regenerate too much energy under braking. This caused the rear tires to suddenly lock up, which led to Verstappen losing control and crashing.
Wache explained that the problem came from the software that manages the car’s energy recovery system. When the system regenerated too much energy at the rear, it disturbed the balance of the car while braking.
The team does not believe the problem is serious. Wache described it as “an easy fix,” suggesting that Red Bull should be able to correct the issue quickly.
Even though Verstappen crashed early in qualifying, the team believes the car still had competitive pace. Wache estimated that if Verstappen had completed the lap and reached the next session, he would likely have been around 0.3 seconds slower than Mercedes.
The incident ended qualifying for Verstappen earlier than expected, but Red Bull remains confident that the issue will not affect the rest of the race weekend.
