F1 COMMISSION PRESENT NEW RULES AHEAD OF 2026
F1 bars Weight-Saving Strategy
Throughout the current Formula 1 regulations, the grid, despite its vibrant mix of colors, has increasingly featured exposed carbon fiber. Teams adopted this approach as a weight-reduction strategy, stripping paint wherever possible to save precious grams.
Starting next year, however, this practice will no longer be permitted.
The F1 Commission, meeting today in London, approved a new rule requiring that at least 55% of each car’s surface be covered by paint or stickers. The aim is to improve visual differentiation between cars and enhance the sport’s overall presentation.
Drivers now free to change numbers during their careers
Formula 1 has also updated its regulations regarding the category’s visual identity.
Drivers will now be allowed to change their racing numbers throughout their careers. The personalized numbering system, introduced in 2014, previously required drivers to keep the same number for their entire time in the sport.
Under the new rule, drivers may switch to any available number at the start of each season, giving them greater freedom and flexibility in how they present themselves.
