PROTON COMPETITION TO LEAVE THE PORSCHE 963 HYPERCAR IN WEC

Team Penske and Proton Competition will not join forces to keep the Porsche 963 Hypercar on the WEC grid.

Porsche Motorsport CEO Thomas Laudenbach told Motorsport Aktuell:
“We agreed with Roger Penske not to pursue these plans any further.”

Laudenbach added that forming a partnership with a private team could be perceived as returning “through the back door,” potentially overshadowing the manufacturer’s achievements over the past three years.

Despite stepping back from WEC involvement, Team Penske still holds an automatic invitation to the 2026 24 Hours of Le Mans, earned through its IMSA GTP championship title. However, that invitation can only be used if two Porsche Hypercars appear on the WEC grid in 2026.

The FIA/ACO will reveal the full entry list on November 27. If two 963s are not entered, Penske’s automatic Le Mans invitation will go unused.
