FORMULA 1 TO RETURN TO PORTUGAL IN 2027 AND 2028

Formula 1 will return to Portugal in the 2027 and 2028 seasons, with the race held at the Algarve International Circuit in Portimão. The official announcement will be made this Tuesday, December 16th by the Minister of Economy, Manuel Castro Almeida, confirming what Prime Minister Luís Montenegro had said earlier this year. The circuit last hosted Formula 1 in 2020 and 2021 during the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to SIC Portugal, the world’s top motorsport series will once again race at the Algarve International Circuit in Portimão, which has already hosted the Portuguese Grand Prix before.

The news comes months after Prime Minister Luís Montenegro said, during the PSD Festival in Pontal, that Portugal planned to officially bring Formula 1 back to the country in 2027. This showed the government’s interest in hosting the event again. The official confirmation will be given this Tuesday by the Minister of Economy, Manuel Castro Almeida.

Formula 1 first raced at the Algarve International Circuit in 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic. That race took place in October and had a limited crowd of 27,500 people.

In 2021, the Portuguese Grand Prix was held with no fans in the stands because of health restrictions at the time.
