FORMULA REGIONAL MIDDLE EAST: ABKHAZAVA WINS FROM POLE

The Formula Regional Middle East Championship kicked off its 2026 season this weekend at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi, with Abkhazava controlling the opening race thanks to a strong and consistent pace throughout.

Throughout the race, Al Dhaheri stayed close to the leader, looking for an opening to launch an attack, but without success. He eventually finished second, ahead of Popov, who completed the podium in third place.

The race featured few battles across the field, with most of the action focused on the fight for fifth place. A three-way battle between Taito Kato, Alex Powell and Ninovic provided some of the main on-track action over several laps.

Also worth noting was the retirement of Wheldon on the final lap, while running in 20th position after an impressive recovery drive, bringing an otherwise encouraging race to an early end.

With this first race completed, the hierarchy remains fairly unclear ahead of tomorrow’s races.
