VERSTAPPEN FRUSTRATED BY SOFTWARE ISSUE IN QUALIFYING

Max Verstappen had a difficult qualifying session at the season-opening race in Melbourne and admitted he was frustrated after crashing in Q1.

The Red Bull driver said he was confused by what happened during his lap. According to Verstappen, the rear of the car suddenly locked under braking, something he described as unusual, which made him crash in turn 1.

“I don’t know what happened in Q1,” Verstappen said after the session. “The rear completely locked, which is not normal. We will check everything to understand exactly what caused it, then we will see what we can do tomorrow. At the moment I don’t know what could happen.”

Despite his own problems, Verstappen congratulated fellow driver Isack Hadjar for his performance. However, he also admitted he was surprised by the large gap between Mercedes and the rest of the field.

“I’m happy for Isack, but I’m also surprised by the gap from Mercedes to the rest of the grid,” he said.

Verstappen also shared his disappointment with the new generation of Formula 1 cars and the way they need to be driven.

“To be honest, I’m not enjoying myself at all,” he explained. “Emotionally and mentally I’m completely drained. This has very little to do with racing honestly. It’s not fun.”

It was a tough day for the four-time world champion, who will now look to recover positions during the race on Sunday.
