GABRIELE MINI AND HIS FORMULA 2 WEEKEND IN MELBOURNE: THE COMEBACK AFTER USUAL BAD LUCK

The opening round of the 2026 Formula 2 season in Melbourne delivered a mixed scenario for Gabriele Minì. Between mechanical issues and spectacular recoveries, the Italian experienced a frustrating weekend, even though he once again revealed the huge potential everyone already knows he has.

Breakdown of Round 1 for Minì

From free practice, Minì immediately looked like one of the standout drivers of the early weekend. The Italian driver set the fastest time of the session, confirming the expectations surrounding his new season with MP. His pace looked strong and suggested promising results for the rest of the weekend. However, a first engine issue disrupted the end of his session.

In qualifying, he once again fell victim to an engine problem at the worst possible moment of the weekend. Minì was unable to set a lap time and saw his chances of a strong qualifying result completely disappear.

The Italian driver was therefore relegated to the back of the grid, starting from 21st place for both races of the weekend, which seriously compromised what followed.

Saturday’s sprint race still allowed the Italian driver to show all of his talent. In a dense field that is always difficult to move through in Formula 2, Minì delivered one of the standout performances of the race.

Lap after lap, he fought his way through the traffic with strong pace and intelligent overtakes. This impressive recovery eventually brought him up to 6th place, a phenomenal result considering his starting position on the grid and all the chaos he went during the race.

The following day, during the feature race, Minì once again confirmed his ability to fight his way through the field despite a complicated weekend. In a race marked by several incidents and safety car periods, the Italian managed to overtake rivals and seize opportunities to finish P8.

At the end of this first weekend of the season, Gabriele Minì therefore sits ninth in the championship standings, despite starting both races from P21. It is a very strong position considering the difficulties he faced during the weekend, especially as he already sits ahead of several drivers considered serious title contenders, such as Alex Dunne.

While bad luck and mechanical problems clearly prevented Minì from fighting for the top positions in Australia, his race performances show plenty of positives for the rest of the season.
