FIA PUSHING TO BAN “BLOWN DIFFUSERS” FROM 2027

The FIA is reportedly pushing to ban “blown diffusers” starting from the 2027 Formula 1 season. The governing body is concerned about the return of aerodynamic concepts linked to the exhaust system and plans to discuss the proposal with teams later this year.

The current designs use airflow from the exhaust area to improve aerodynamic performance around the diffuser, helping generate more downforce at the rear of the car. Similar ideas were famously used during the early 2010s before eventually being restricted by the FIA.

The discussion comes after Ferrari introduced new diffuser-related concepts during the Chinese Grand Prix weekend. These developments quickly attracted attention inside the paddock and raised concerns that teams could begin exploring increasingly aggressive solutions in the coming years.

The FIA is also reviewing the so-called “halo winglets,” small aerodynamic elements attached around the halo structure. These parts were also seen on Ferrari’s car in China and could face a possible ban if officials decide they create unnecessary aerodynamic advantages or increase development costs.

No final decision has been made yet, but the topic is expected to become an important discussion point between the FIA and Formula 1 teams as work continues on the future technical regulations.
