TOTO WOLFF OPENS DOOR FOR POSSIBLE RETURN OF V8 ENGINES

The head of Mercedes Toto Wolff has opened the door to a possible return of the fan-favorite V8 engines in Formula 1, while also insisting that electric power must remain part of the sport’s future.

Speaking about the topic, the Mercedes boss said the company still has strong emotional connections to the V8 era, which produced some of the most memorable moments in modern Formula 1 history.

“We love the V8s,” he explained. “I think it is a true Mercedes engine and it gave us many great memories.”

However, he also made it clear that a complete return to fully combustion-powered engines would not make sense in today’s automotive world. Instead, he suggested a future formula that keeps a major hybrid component alongside a powerful internal combustion engine.

According to his vision, Formula 1 could potentially use engines producing around 800 horsepower from combustion power, combined with another 400 horsepower from electric energy. The idea would allow the sport to maintain high performance while still reflecting the direction of modern automotive technology.

The Mercedes boss warned that moving from the current 50/50 balance between combustion and electric power straight back to 100% combustion engines by 2031 could make Formula 1 appear outdated.
