BAGNAIA TAKES POLE AFTER THRILLING QUALIFYING BATTLE AT LE MANS

Qualifying for the French Grand Prix at Le Mans delivered exactly the drama MotoGP fans expected. Francesco Bagnaia secured his first pole position of the 2026 season after a brilliant final lap, beating teammate Marc Marquez in a tense fight for the top spot. Championship leader Marco Bezzecchi completed the front row for Aprilia after another strong performance.

The action started in Q1, where several big names were fighting for the final places in Q2. Home favourite Fabio Quartararo immediately looked fast and briefly held the quickest time with a series of strong laps. However, Marc Marquez responded in spectacular fashion, smashing the lap record with a stunning final run to finish first in Q1. Quartararo also advanced safely into Q2, giving the French crowd another rider to support in the main session.

Once Q2 began, the battle for pole position quickly intensified. Early runs saw Bezzecchi take provisional pole ahead of Fabio Di Giannantonio and Jorge Martin. Marc Marquez’s first attempt only placed him sixth, while Quartararo sat seventh and Johann Zarco was outside the top ten. But with fresh tyres fitted for the final attacks, the session exploded into life.

Marc Marquez looked set to secure pole after producing a very fast lap during the second runs. At the same time, his brother Alex Marquez crashed at Turn 3, ending his hopes of fighting near the front. The Spaniard escaped without injury, but the incident disrupted the final minutes of qualifying.

Just when it seemed Marc Marquez had done enough, Bagnaia produced a brilliant final lap to snatch pole position away from his Ducati teammate. The Italian delivered under pressure to secure his first pole since Sepang last season and give Ducati Lenovo Team a front-row lockout for the first time since Brno last year.

Bezzecchi held on to third place to complete a very strong front row. Di Giannantonio narrowly missed out and had to settle for fourth after losing time in the final sector of his lap. Pedro Acosta finished fifth despite running through the gravel at Turn 2 during the session, while Quartararo gave the home fans something to cheer about with sixth place.

Joan Mir was the highest Honda rider in seventh position, continuing the manufacturer’s encouraging weekend at Le Mans. Jorge Martin qualified eighth for Aprilia, rookie Ai Ogura took ninth, and Alex Marquez completed the top ten despite his earlier crash.

Johann Zarco, who topped Friday’s Practice session, could only manage 11th on the grid in front of his home crowd, while Alex Rins finished 12th for Yamaha.

With Bagnaia, Marc Marquez, and Bezzecchi sharing the front row, the stage is now perfectly set for an exciting Sprint race and Grand Prix at Le Mans.
