FIRST PART OF INDY 500 QUALIFYING POSTPONED BY HEAVY RAIN

The first part of qualifying for the Indy 500 has been postponed after heavy rain stopped any running at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The session will now take place on Sunday at 12:00 PM local time in Indianapolis, which is 5:00 PM British time. INDYCAR confirmed that persistent rain forced the change to the schedule.

The decision was made for safety reasons. On oval tracks, IndyCar does not run in wet conditions because the speeds are extremely high and the cars need a completely dry surface. Firestone also states that rain tires are used only on road and street courses, not on ovals.

The delay means the qualifying format will now be packed into one busy Sunday. Drivers will first fight to secure their place on the grid, before the fastest cars move on to the later stages.

The Fast 12 and Fast 6 sessions are also set to take place on Sunday evening, with the fight for pole position expected to begin around 9:30 PM British time. That will decide who starts at the front for one of the biggest races in motorsport.
