FORMULA 2 HEADS TO MONACO FOR THE FIRST EUROPEAN ROUND

Formula 2 heads to the streets of Monaco this weekend for one of the most demanding and prestigious rounds of the 2026 season. After an exceptional weekend in Canada, the championship now moves to the tight and unforgiving circuit of Monte Carlo, where even the smallest mistake can have immediate consequences.

The European leg of the season officially begins with Round 4 in Monaco. Known for producing unforgettable moments, the iconic street circuit always delivers a unique challenge for drivers and teams. With barriers close to the track and very little room for error, Monaco remains one of the toughest tests on the calendar.

At the top of the championship standings, Gabriele Minì arrives full of confidence after a perfect weekend in Canada. The MP Motorsport driver took the championship lead thanks to two podium finishes in Montreal and now holds a 19-point advantage over his closest rivals. His consistency has been impressive, as he has scored points in every race so far this season.

Minì also has an excellent record in Monaco. The Italian won the Formula 3 Feature Race from pole position twice and finished second in last year’s Formula 2 Sprint Race. Those results will give him confidence, but several of his rivals also have strong memories of racing in Monte Carlo and will be determined to reduce his championship lead.

One of the biggest talking points this weekend will be qualifying. In Monaco, qualifying is often the most important session of the entire weekend. Overtaking opportunities are extremely limited, meaning a strong starting position can make the difference between victory and disappointment. Drivers will need to push to the limit while avoiding costly mistakes, especially with the possibility of red flags interrupting the session.

The season has already produced plenty of excitement, with five different winners in the opening six races. Nikola Tsolov remains the only driver to have won more than once, taking victories in the Melbourne Feature Race and the Miami Sprint Race. The Bulgarian has also enjoyed great success in Monaco, winning at the circuit in Formula 3 in each of the last two years. He will be aiming to continue that impressive record this weekend.

However, many drivers will be hoping to become the next new winner of the season. The competitiveness of the field has made every race unpredictable, and Monaco’s unique characteristics could once again shake up the order.

Drama is almost guaranteed in Monte Carlo. The last two Formula 2 Feature Races in Monaco were decided in dramatic fashion. In 2024, Zak O’Sullivan claimed victory after a bold alternate strategy and a perfectly timed Virtual Safety Car, despite starting from 15th on the grid. Last year, Jak Crawford made a late pit stop under the Safety Car and turned what looked like a fourth-place finish into a memorable victory.

Those races proved that opportunities can appear at any moment in Monaco. Strategy, timing, and a bit of luck often play just as important a role as outright pace.

Weather could also become a factor during the weekend. While current forecasts suggest dry conditions for Saturday and Sunday, there is a small chance of rain on Friday. Any rain on a circuit with limited grip could make conditions even more challenging for the drivers, especially during the early sessions when the track surface is still evolving.

With a championship battle beginning to take shape, a highly competitive field, and Monaco’s reputation for producing unforgettable races, all the ingredients are in place for another exciting Formula 2 weekend in the Principality.
