FORMER FIA FORMULA 3 DRIVER ZDENĚK CHOVANEC PASSES AWAY AT 21
The motorsport community is mourning the passing of former FIA Formula 3 driver Zdeněk Chovanec, who died on July 18 at the age of 21. His death was confirmed by several motorsport organizations and media outlets. The cause of death has not been made public.
Born in Puerto la Cruz, Venezuela, Chovanec held Venezuelan, Portuguese and Czech nationality. After moving to Portugal at a young age, he competed under a Portuguese racing licence throughout much of his career and became one of the country’s most promising young racing drivers.
Chovanec made his car racing debut in 2020, competing in the Formula 4 UAE Championship and the Italian Formula 4 Championship. In 2021, he stepped up to the Euroformula Open before joining Charouz Racing System midway through the FIA Formula 3 season. He returned to the championship with the Czech team for selected rounds in 2022, making a total of 12 starts across the two seasons.
Away from Formula 3, Chovanec enjoyed his biggest success in the 2022 BOSS GP Series. Driving a previous-generation GP2 car for MM International Motorsport, he won five races and claimed five pole positions, finishing fifth in the Formula Class despite not contesting the full season.
In 2023, he moved to prototype racing, competing in the Ultimate Cup Series with TS Corse in an LMP3 car. That would be his final season in professional motorsport before stepping away from racing in 2024.
Following the news of his passing, the FIA Formula 3 Championship paid tribute to Chovanec, offering its condolences to his family, friends and everyone who knew him. Messages of support have also been shared across the motorsport community by former teams, drivers and fans remembering his career and contribution to the sport.
