FORMULA 3 HEADS TO BUDAPEST WITH THE TITLE FIGHT WIDE OPEN
The 2026 FIA Formula 3 season heads to the Hungaroring for Round 7, the final race weekend before the summer break. After a dramatic weekend at Spa-Francorchamps, the championship battle has become even closer, with just one point separating the top two drivers. With only a few rounds remaining after Hungary, every point will be crucial in the fight for the title.
Ugo Ugochukwu arrives in Budapest still leading the Drivers’ Championship, but his advantage has almost disappeared. The American scored no points at Spa after making contact with Freddie Slater in the Sprint Race, leaving the door open for his rivals. Slater also retired from that race, but his strong performances throughout the weekend allowed him to reduce the gap to only one point, setting up a direct fight between the two title contenders.
The battle is far from being limited to the championship leaders. Several drivers remain capable of fighting for victories, including Ernesto Rivera, who claimed his first Formula 3 Feature Race victory at Spa. The Red Bull Junior has continued to improve throughout the season and now moves closer to the top three in the standings.
Mattia Colnaghi also heads to Hungary with growing confidence after finishing fourth in both races at Spa. The MP Motorsport driver has enjoyed one of his strongest weekends of the year and will look to continue that momentum on a circuit where consistency and tyre management are essential.
The Hungaroring is one of the most technical tracks on the Formula 3 calendar. Often compared to a karting circuit because of its many medium and slow-speed corners, it offers very few overtaking opportunities. That makes qualifying one of the most important sessions of the weekend, as track position usually plays a decisive role in both races.
Action begins on Friday with a 45-minute Free Practice session before Qualifying later in the afternoon. The qualifying session will decide the grid for both races, with the Sprint Race taking place on Saturday and the Feature Race on Sunday morning.
History also suggests qualifying will be even more important this weekend. Pole position has been converted into victory in the Formula 3 Feature Race in three of the last four visits to the Hungaroring, showing how difficult it can be to overtake during the race.
No driver on the current Formula 3 grid has won at the Hungaroring, although both Ugo Ugochukwu and Tuukka Taponen have previously finished on the podium at the circuit. Spa Sprint Race winner Jin Nakamura also arrives with confidence after giving Hitech its first victory of the season, meaning eight of the ten Formula 3 teams have now won at least one race in 2026. Campos Racing remains the most successful team of the year with five victories.
MP Motorsport driver Tuukka Taponen believes Hungary is one of the toughest circuits on the calendar because of its layout and the summer temperatures. The Finnish driver explained that Turns 1 and 2 offer the best overtaking opportunities, but following another car closely is extremely difficult. He also highlighted how managing tyre temperatures becomes one of the biggest challenges over a race distance.
Pirelli has selected the Medium compound for the Budapest weekend. The Italian manufacturer expects tyre performance to depend heavily on track temperatures. If conditions are cooler, graining could become a problem, while high temperatures would increase thermal degradation, especially on the rear tyres because of the many traction zones around the circuit. Drivers who manage their rear tyres best could gain an important advantage during both races.
