JORGE MARTIN TAKES SILVERSTONE POLE WITH NEW LAP RECORD
Jorge Martin took pole position for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, starting the second half of the MotoGP season in the best possible way. The Aprilia rider set a new lap record of 1:56.160, beating Raul Fernandez by just 0.021 seconds.
Trackhouse completed the front row with Ai Ogura in third, giving Aprilia and its satellite team three of the top three places. The top six in the championship also occupy the first six positions on the grid, with Fabio Di Giannantonio fourth, Marco Bezzecchi fifth and Marc Marquez sixth.
Q1 went down to the final laps, with Franco Morbidelli and Iker Lecuona securing the two places into Q2. Lecuona produced his best lap at the end of the session to beat Fabio Quartararo by just 0.050 seconds. Quartararo therefore starts 13th, while Francesco Bagnaia could only manage 16th after failing to make it through Q1.
In Q2, Marc Marquez initially led the session before Bezzecchi and then Raul Fernandez moved to the top. Fernandez set a 1:56.181 to establish a new lap record, but Martin responded on his final attempt with a 1:56.160 to take pole.
Bezzecchi will start fifth despite losing part of the rear section of his Aprilia during the session. Di Giannantonio is the only rider between the four Aprilia-powered machines in the top five.
Alex Marquez starts seventh, followed by Morbidelli and Pedro Acosta on the third row. Lecuona will start an impressive 10th after progressing through Q1, with Jack Miller 11th as the highest-placed Yamaha rider.
Joan Mir starts 12th ahead of Quartararo and Diogo Moreira, while Luca Marini takes 15th. Bagnaia will start 16th, ahead of Alex Rins and Brad Binder.
Enea Bastianini will start only 19th, with home rider Cal Crutchlow just 0.020 seconds behind him in 20th. Crutchlow continues to replace Johann Zarco and will be followed on the grid by Pol Espargaro, Toprak Razgatlioglu and wildcard rider Augusto Fernandez.
The Silverstone Grand Prix will therefore see Martin start from pole with Fernandez and Ogura alongside him, while all six championship contenders begin the race inside the top six.
