ALEXANDER ALBON RENEWS WITH WILLIAMS FOR 2027
Alexander Albon will remain with Williams for the 2027 Formula 1 season after the team confirmed a contract extension. The new deal will keep the Thai driver at Grove for a sixth consecutive season, continuing a partnership that started in 2022.
Albon joined Williams after spending the 2021 season away from a race seat following his departure from Red Bull. Since then, he has become an important part of the team’s rebuilding project and has taken on a leading role as Williams works to return to the front of the grid.
The decision comes during a difficult 2026 season for Williams. After finishing fifth in the Constructors’ Championship in 2025, the team has struggled with its 2026 car and currently sits ninth in the standings. Albon has scored five points so far this season, one fewer than teammate Carlos Sainz.
Despite the poor results, Albon believes the current situation does not change his view of the team’s long-term project. He pointed to the major changes made at Williams since his arrival, including improvements at the factory, in its technical structure and in the way the team works.
“One tough year doesn’t tell the full picture,” Albon said after the announcement. He added that the difficult season has given him more motivation to continue working with the team and try to take Williams back up the grid.
Team Principal James Vowles also made clear how important Albon is to the project. Vowles described him as one of the best drivers on the grid and said that Albon has been a leader of the team’s transformation from the beginning.
Albon’s new contract also continues a record-breaking period with Williams. Earlier this year, he became the driver with the most Grand Prix starts for the team, passing Nigel Mansell’s previous record at the Spanish Grand Prix. He then reached 100 starts for Williams at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
His time with Williams has also included some of the team’s best results in recent years. In 2025, Albon finished eighth in the Drivers’ Championship with 73 points, helped by several fifth-place finishes. Williams ended that season fifth in the Constructors’ Championship, its best result since 2016.
The 2027 season will therefore mark Albon’s sixth year with Williams. It will also be an important period for the team as it continues its rebuilding plan and prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary in Formula 1.
For now, Albon’s future is settled, while the situation of Carlos Sainz remains less clear. Sainz joined Williams in 2025 after leaving Ferrari and is yet to secure his future with the team beyond his current agreement.
