ALEX ZANARDI HAS PASSED AWAY: THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF A REMARKABLE CHAMPION
Alex Zanardi has died at the age of 59, according to confirmation from his family. His passing marks the end of one of the most extraordinary and emotional life stories in modern sport, defined by success, tragedy, and an almost unmatched level of resilience.
Zanardi first became known in Formula 1, where he raced for teams such as Jordan, Minardi, Lotus, and Williams. While his F1 career showed moments of talent, his biggest success came later in the CART series in the United States, where he became a two-time champion. He was known for his aggressive but skillful driving style, as well as his strong personality and determination on track.
In 2001, his life changed completely during a CART race at the Lausitzring circuit in Germany. He was involved in a horrific crash that led to the loss of both of his legs. He also suffered life-threatening blood loss and underwent emergency surgery to survive. The accident shocked the motorsport world and many believed his racing career was over.
However, Zanardi returned to life and sport with a level of determination that became his defining trait. After years of rehabilitation, he returned to racing in adapted cars with hand controls. He later competed in touring car racing, including appearances in the World Touring Car Championship, proving that he was still capable of competing at a professional level despite his injuries.
He then transitioned into para-sport, where he found even greater success. Using a handbike designed for his needs, he became one of the greatest Paralympic athletes in history. He won multiple gold medals at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, becoming a global symbol of courage, discipline, and reinvention.
In 2020, while competing in a handbike event in Tuscany, Italy, he suffered another devastating accident when he was struck by a truck. He sustained severe head injuries and underwent long rehabilitation. He spent a long period in hospital and continued his recovery at home afterward.
During his recovery years, he remained mostly out of public life, focusing on medical treatment and rehabilitation. Despite the setbacks, his story continued to inspire millions around the world, not only in motorsport but also in disability sport and beyond.

He passed away in 2026, leaving behind a legacy that goes far beyond racing results. Alex Zanardi is remembered as a driver, a champion, and above all, a person who repeatedly rebuilt his life after unimaginable setbacks, turning suffering into inspiration for others.
