FORMULA 2 WEEKEND PREVIEW AT MONZA
Formula 2 is back to Italy for its eleventh round of the season, in the iconic Autodromo Nazionale di Monza, for the final european event.
The Italian Leonardo Fornaroli arrives to his second home race of the season leading the championship 17 points ahead of the Aston Martin junior Jak Crawford. The amazing consistency of the Italian has seen him finish every race that he got until the chequered flag within the top 8, with three wins, two of them being in sprint races.
He is followed by the American Jak Crawford, who is linked to the Andretti team and was in contention for the reserve seat in the Cadillac F1 Team, lately taken by Indycar star Colton Herta.
The experienced Richard Verschoor is two points behind with MP Motorsport, having both Browning and Dunne following him within a 10-point gap.
In such a competitive track with long straights, only one pole sitter has managed to win starting first at Monza, his name is Oscar Piastri, with Prema, back in the 2021 Feature race. This means that other than the two point given for pole position, qualifying has less importance than other tracks.
The proof of this is shown by the Brazilian Gabriel Bortoleto, who last year won the Feature race starting last on the grid, showing that climbing the grid is much easier compared to other tracks.
Two drivers with Formula 2 experience have been announced to drive in Formula 1 Free Practice 1 on Friday, they are Paul Aron, who raced in the series last year with Hitech, while the other one is Alexander Dunne, currently racing in FIA F2 with Rodin Motorsport, backed by Mclaren. The former is taking over Franco Colapinto’s car, while the latter Oscar Piastri’s at Mclaren.
The current constructors’ championship leader is Invicta Racing, who has had a streak of incredible results in the past few rounds, having both of their drivers winning races. They are followed by Campos of Arvid Lindblad and Pepe Marti.
