ITALY LEADS FORMULA 1 AND MOTOGP AGAIN WITH ANTONELLI AND BEZZECCHI
Italy has a rare reason to celebrate in world motorsport. For the first time since 1952, an Italian is leading both the Formula 1 and MotoGP championships at the same time, with Kimi Antonelli and Marco Bezzecchi respectively.
In Formula 1, Kimi Antonelli has become one of the biggest stories of the 2026 season. In MotoGP, Marco Bezzecchi has now taken control of the championship after winning the Italian Grand Prix at Mugello.
Antonelli’s season has been impressive from the start. He finished second in Australia, then won in China, Japan, Miami and Canada. By the Canadian Grand Prix, he had already taken four wins, three pole positions, six fastest laps and eight podiums in Formula 1.
That form has made Antonelli the leader of the Formula 1 championship. Still only a young driver, he is already carrying Italian motorsport back to the very top of the sport.
Bezzecchi’s season has been just as important in MotoGP. Before Mugello, he had already won races in Thailand, Brazil and the United States. Then came the Italian Grand Prix, where he delivered the biggest win of his year so far.
Winning at Mugello made the moment feel even bigger. Bezzecchi won at home, in front of the Italian fans, on one of the most famous tracks in motorcycle racing. It was not just a race win. It was a statement.
With that victory, Bezzecchi moved into the lead of the MotoGP standings. After seven rounds, he now leads the championship by 17 points.
That means Italy is now leading both of the biggest world championships in car and motorcycle racing. Antonelli leads Formula 1, while Bezzecchi leads MotoGP.
The last time this happened was in 1952. Back then, Alberto Ascari was the Italian star leading Formula 1, while Umberto Masetti was the Italian rider leading the top class of motorcycle racing.
More than 70 years later, Italy has reached that same kind of moment again. The names are different, the machines are different, and the sport has changed completely, but the feeling is familiar.
