FREC: THE CHAMPIONSHIP HEADS TO ZANDVOORT AFTER AN EXCITING ROUND 1
The Formula Regional European Championship (FREC) heads to Zandvoort this weekend for the second round of the season. After an eventful opening round in Austria almost a month ago, the championship now enters its first “back-to-back” of the year.
An outstanding start to the season in Austria
The opening weekend at the Red Bull Ring delivered a thrilling and action-packed show, featuring a format with two qualifying sessions and three races.
Pre-season favorite Kean Nakamura-Berta got his campaign off to a perfect start by securing a double pole position and winning the first race. However, the rest of his weekend proved more challenging, particularly in Race 3 where several mistakes prevented him from reaching the finish. The Japanese driver will also carry a grid penalty to Zandvoort for the collision in the last event of the first round.
Rashid Al Dhaheri stood out with one of the performances of the weekend, taking victory in Race 2 after an impressive comeback drive.
Reno Francot made the biggest statement by winning the third race, a result that puts him at the top of the championship standings.
Among the rookies, Alex Munoz, Emanuele Olivieri, and Gabriel Gomez all scored points during their first weekend in the category.

Zandvoort, a key weekend to build momentum
After nearly a month-long break since Austria, teams and drivers return to the track under different circumstances. The format changes this weekend, with two races instead of three, and Zandvoort also marks the beginning of the season’s first back-to-back, with Spa-Francorchamps following next weekend.
This is an important factor that could impact both drivers and teams, as the tight schedule leaves very little time to recover. Rookies, in particular, may find it challenging to manage.
A technical and demanding track
The Zandvoort circuit presents a significant challenge. Narrow, twisty, and fast-flowing, with plenty of elevation changes, it offers little room for error and makes overtaking difficult.
Qualifying will be crucial for the outcome of the weekend.
Early trends still to be confirmed
While Reno Francot arrives as the championship leader, the pecking order remains highly uncertain after just one round. Performances in Austria showed that several drivers are capable of fighting at the front.
Between confirmation for some and a need to bounce back for others, adapting to the demanding Zandvoort circuit this weekend could provide key insights for the rest of the season.
