FORMULA E HEADS TO SANYA AND KICKS OFF CHINESE SWING

The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship returns after a two-week break following the Monaco E-Prix.

The championship now heads to China for a month-long stay, with the next three rounds taking place in Asia’s largest country. The Sanya E-Prix returns this weekend for the first time since March 2019, during Season 5. After Sanya, Formula E will travel to the Chinese capital, Shanghai, for a double-header event.

A NOT-SO-NEW LOCATION

The Sanya Street Circuit returns to the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship for the first time in the GEN3 era. The revised layout features a mix of high-speed sections and tight hairpins, creating several overtaking opportunities throughout the lap.

A new sequence of opening corners leads into a wide hairpin before drivers tackle two long straights interrupted by heavy-braking zones, making energy management and racecraft crucial. The circuit last hosted Formula E in Season 5, when Jean-Éric Vergne claimed victory after overtaking Oliver Rowland in a decisive move, while Rowland secured his first Formula E pole position at the venue.

EVANS LEADS, BUT ROWLAND AND MORTARA ARE CLOSING IN

Mitch Evans is putting together one of the most consistent campaigns of his Formula E career and is chasing his first-ever world title in what is expected to be his final season with Jaguar. However, the New Zealander will need to keep a close eye on reigning champion Oliver Rowland and veteran Edoardo Mortara.

Rowland has significantly improved his momentum over the last four rounds. After scoring two podium finishes in Berlin and winning Race 2 of the Monaco E-Prix, he now sits just 19 points behind Evans in the championship standings.

Meanwhile, Mortara is enjoying arguably the best season of his Formula E career at the age of 39. The Swiss driver has already secured two podiums and two pole positions this season and is only six points behind Rowland, making him another serious threat to Evans’ title ambitions.

DRUGOVICH CONTINUES TO IMPROVE

Season 12 has been one of the toughest challenges of Felipe Drugovich’s racing career. The Brazilian struggled to adapt to Formula E early in the campaign and was frequently outpaced by teammate Jake Dennis.

However, Monaco may have marked a turning point. Drugovich, who had already been showing improvement in qualifying, delivered an impressive performance to finish second in Race 2 thanks to excellent strategy and strong pace in the closing stages. It was undoubtedly a major milestone in his Formula E development.

WEHRLEIN’S TITLE CHALLENGE FADING

Pascal Wehrlein is currently enduring the worst stretch of his season.

With only one points finish in the last four rounds, the driver who led the championship earlier in the year has fallen to fourth in the standings. Based on his recent form, his title challenge appears to be slipping away, and he will need an immediate response if he hopes to remain in contention.

SEASON 13 CALENDAR SET TO BE REVEALED

Formula E is expected to unveil its Season 13 calendar in the coming days. The schedule is reportedly finalized and will be officially revealed on June 23, the Tuesday following the Sanya E-Prix.

The main rumor surrounding the new calendar is a potential change to the season opener, with Jeddah expected to replace São Paulo as the first race of the campaign.

With just seven rounds remaining, the battle for the Formula E World Championship is heating up. The question remains: who will come out on top in this thrilling title fight?
