CHRISTIAN LUNDGAARD WINS CRAZY RACE AT ROAD AMERICA FROM LAST TO FIRST

Christian Lundgaard delivered one of the most remarkable comebacks by winning the Grand Prix at Road America after starting the race from 13th position, but ending lap 1 in last. The Danish driver for Arrow McLaren overcame early damage and multiple cautions to secure his third career IndyCar victory and his second win of the season.

The race began in a difficult way for Lundgaard, who made contact with Scott Dixon at the start. The incident damaged his front wing and forced an early pit stop, dropping him to the back of the field. From there, his race looked compromised, but a chaotic event full of cautions and strategy changes quickly opened the door for recovery.

At the front of the race, Alex Palou led from pole position, controlling the opening phase ahead of Marcus Armstrong, David Malukas and Felix Rosenqvist. However, the race quickly turned unpredictable when multiple incidents triggered cautions and changed the order. A major moment came when Romain Grosjean suffered a loose wheel after leaving the pits, causing another caution and changing the race strategy for several drivers.

More chaos followed when Christian Rasmussen stopped on track due to hybrid issues, bringing out another caution period that heavily influenced pit stop timing. Several frontrunners, including Palou, were affected by penalties and pit lane timing issues, which dropped them out of position and allowed others to move forward.

As the race progressed, Lundgaard slowly climbed back through the field. He benefited from well-timed pit stops and caution periods, which allowed him to recover positions without needing constant overtakes in traffic. His strategy focused on staying out during key caution windows and then pushing hard on fresh tyres when the track was clear.

In the final stage of the race, Lundgaard made a crucial late stop and rejoined in second position position with fresher tyres than the leaders. This allowed him to quickly close the gap to the car in front, which was Marcus Armstrong. Armstrong then led the race with a small gap, but his advantage started to shrink as the finish approached.

With just a few laps remaining, Armstrong’s car began to suffer mechanical issues. The Meyer Shank Racing driver suddenly slowed on track, losing power and eventually coming to a stop. This moment completely changed the outcome of the race, allowing Lundgaard to take the lead at a critical stage.

A late caution was triggered as a result of Armstrong’s retirement, setting up a final sprint to the finish. In the restart, Lundgaard held his position and crossed the line to take a dramatic victory at Road America. Malukas finished second, scoring another strong result after finishing runner-up for the third time in his career.

Behind them, a late battle for the final podium position ended in controversy. Will Power and Graham Rahal fought intensely in the closing corners, but contact between the two forced Rahal off track just a few corners from the finish. Kyffin Simpson initially crossed the line in third place, but after a post-race review, officials ruled that track position had changed under caution conditions, adjusting the final classification.

The final results placed Simpson fourth behind Power and Malukas, while championship leader Alex Palou recovered to finish fifth despite his earlier penalty. Scott McLaughlin, Alexander Rossi, Felix Rosenqvist and other drivers completed the top positions after a race filled with strategy swings, penalties and multiple cautions.
