FORMULA 1 ARRIVES AT THE RED BULL RING FOR THE AUSTRIAN GRAND PRIX
Formula 1 heads to the Red Bull Ring for the Austrian Grand Prix, a race that could mark the beginning of a new championship battle. Ferrari’s victory in Spain ended Mercedes’ long winning streak and gave the Italian team a huge boost in confidence. Lewis Hamilton claimed his first race win as a Ferrari driver, creating a memorable moment for both the team and its fans.
Ferrari does not want to stop there. While the FIA is still expected to confirm the official ADUO figures, the team is already working on an updated version of its power unit. The goal is to reduce the power gap that currently separates Ferrari from Mercedes and Red Bull, especially in terms of engine performance.
The team introduced a major upgrade package in Spain that was estimated to be worth around three tenths of a second per lap. These improvements helped Ferrari challenge Mercedes more effectively. Although strategy decisions and team orders also played an important role, Ferrari executed the race perfectly and managed to beat its main rival.
Mercedes now looks for a response at a circuit where engine performance is extremely important. The Red Bull Ring features three long acceleration zones where power delivery is critical and the hybrid system is placed under significant stress. The W17 struggled with high temperatures in Spain, and Austria will present another challenge because of its higher altitude, where thinner air makes cooling more difficult for teams.
Red Bull should not be overlooked. The Austrian team is expected to introduce an important upgrade package at its home race. One of the main objectives is to reduce the weight of the RB22, which started the season slightly above the FIA weight limit. The team hopes that a lighter car will improve overall efficiency and performance.
In Spain, the RB22 showed weaknesses in medium- and high-speed corners, especially in sections that require strong stability through long turns. Austria will provide a valuable test to measure the effectiveness of Red Bull’s latest developments and determine whether the team can move closer to the front.
What does Pirelli bring to Red Bull Ring
For the eighth round of the 2026 season, Pirelli will bring its softest tire compounds. Teams will have the C3 compound as the Hard tire, the C4 as the Medium, and the C5 as the Soft. The circuit at Spielberg has only a few corners but several long straights, placing heavy demands on the tires through repeated braking and acceleration zones.
Tire wear at the Red Bull Ring is mainly caused by heat rather than surface abrasion. Managing temperatures will therefore be crucial throughout the weekend, especially during long race stints. With warm conditions expected and several teams bringing important upgrades, the Austrian Grand Prix could become one of the most significant events of the season so far.
