GABRIELE MINÌ WINS HUNGARORING F2 SPRINT RACE AFTER LATE FIGHT FOR THE LEAD
Gabriele Minì won the Formula 2 Sprint Race at the Hungaroring, securing victory in the ninth round of the 2026 season. The MP Motorsport driver, who entered the weekend as championship runner-up, fought for the lead with Sebastian Montoya before taking control of the race on lap 17 of 28.
Montoya started from pole position thanks to the reversed grid and led the opening part of the race, but Minì stayed close and waited for the right moment to attack. The Italian completed the decisive move in the second half of the race and managed the remaining laps to take his first Sprint Race victory of the season.
Dino Beganovic finished second for DAMS after being unable to match Minì’s pace in the final stages, crossing the finish line more than three seconds behind the winner. Laurens van Hoepen completed the podium for Trident after successfully defending his position against Rafael Câmara, who finished fourth after starting ninth with Invicta Racing.
Kush Maini secured fifth place for ART Grand Prix, followed by his teammate Tasanapol Inthraphuvasak in sixth. Joshua Dürksen finished seventh with Invicta Racing, while Martinius Stenshorne completed the points-paying positions in eighth for Rodin Motorsport.
The race also brought a major setback for championship leader Nikola Tsolov. The Campos Racing driver attempted to overtake Montoya for second place but the two made contact, forcing both cars into retirement and bringing out the Virtual Safety Car.
With Tsolov scoring no points, Minì’s victory becomes even more important in the championship fight as the Italian reduces the gap at the top of the standings heading into Sunday’s Feature Race at the Hungaroring.
