HÜLKENBERG FORCED TO RETIRE IN BARCELONA AFTER STRANGE DEBRIS INCIDENT
Nico Hülkenberg was forced to retire from the Barcelona Grand Prix after an unusual and extremely rare chain of events involving track debris caused critical damage to his car’s systems.
The incident happened when Liam Lawson ran wide at Turn 11 and kicked up gravel onto the circuit while rejoining the track. Hülkenberg, who was following closely behind, was caught in the spray of loose stones as he approached the corner.
One of the stones reportedly struck a sensitive area of the car, hitting the fire extinguisher system and the ERS shutdown switch. The impact caused a serious systems fault, forcing the driver to stop the car and retire immediately for safety reasons.
The damage was not related to a traditional mechanical failure or crash, but rather an unlucky and rare case of debris striking key control components in just the wrong location. Once the systems were triggered, the car could not be safely reset from the cockpit, leaving Hülkenberg with no option but to pull over.
