INDYCAR RETURNS TO NASHVILLE AS THE CHAMPIONSHIP BATTLE HEATS UP

The NTT INDYCAR Series returns to oval racing this weekend with the Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix at Nashville Superspeedway. After being held on the streets of Nashville between 2021 and 2023, the championship returned to the oval in 2024, and the 2026 event now takes place in the middle of the season rather than as the finale.

The 1.33-mile concrete oval is one of the most demanding tracks on the calendar. The circuit features 14 degrees of banking in the corners, nine degrees on the front straight and six degrees on the back straight. Its abrasive concrete surface and long green-flag runs make tyre management and race strategy especially important. This year’s race has also been extended from 225 to 300 laps, making it the second-longest race of the season after the Indianapolis 500 and adding at least one extra pit stop to most strategies.

The track first hosted Indy-style racing in 2001 during the Indy Racing League era and remained on the schedule until 2008 before disappearing because of financial and ownership issues. Following the success of the Nashville street race, IndyCar returned to the superspeedway in 2024, bringing oval racing back to Tennessee.

Alex Palou arrives in Nashville as the championship leader with 404 points after another remarkable season. The Chip Ganassi Racing driver holds a 56-point advantage over Kyle Kirkwood, who returned to the podium at Mid-Ohio to keep his title hopes alive. Christian Lundgaard and David Malukas remain close behind, while Pato O’Ward climbed back into contention after his victory at Mid-Ohio. With several races still to come, the championship remains wide open despite Palou’s advantage.

One driver to watch this weekend is Josef Newgarden. The Tennessee native returns to his home race as the defending Nashville Superspeedway winner and one of the strongest oval racers in IndyCar history. Newgarden has won 19 of the last 48 oval races and has claimed victories in each of the last three short-oval events, making him one of the favourites for Sunday’s race.

Scott Dixon is another driver with an outstanding record at Nashville. The six-time IndyCar champion won three consecutive races at the track between 2006 and 2008 and will be looking to add another strong result as Chip Ganassi Racing aims to strengthen Palou’s championship campaign.
