LANDO NORRIS TAKES UNEXPECTED SPRINT POLE IN MIAMI

Formula 1 returned to action in Miami after more than a month away, bringing an unusual weekend format with only one practice session followed by Sprint Qualifying, where Lando Norris took pole. To help teams adapt to recent rule adjustments for the 2026 regulations, the practice session was extended to 90 minutes instead of the usual 60, giving extra time to test new parts and understand changes without pressure on lap times.

Many teams arrived with significant upgrades. Ferrari introduced several changes across the car, including new aerodynamic parts and adjustments to suspension areas. McLaren and Red Bull also focused heavily on improving efficiency, while Mercedes chose to wait before bringing major updates. Some midfield teams made smaller changes, while Aston Martin stayed with its current package as it continues to deal with engine-related issues.

Sprint Qualifying delivered an exciting battle for pole position. Norris continued his strong form and secured first place on the grid with an impressive final lap, marking McLaren’s first pole position of the season. Antonelli finished second for Mercedes, showing great pace once again, while Oscar Piastri completed a strong result for McLaren in third.

Leclerc placed fourth for Ferrari after another competitive performance, followed by Verstappen in fifth. Russell took sixth but was several tenths behind the leader, while Hamilton finished seventh. Further down the top 10, Franco Colapinto, Isack Hadjar, and Pierre Gasly completed the final positions.

Outside the top 10, several teams struggled to keep up. Audi drivers just missed the final segment, while Haas and Williams also failed to progress further, with some frustration heard over team radio. Racing Bulls and Cadillac had a difficult session as well, with their drivers finishing near the back.

Aston Martin had a particularly tough day, with both Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll ending at the bottom of the standings, highlighting the team’s current difficulties.

Overall, the Miami weekend started with a mix of strong performances and unexpected challenges. McLaren’s pace and Norris’ pole position suggest they will be serious contenders, while Ferrari and Mercedes remain close behind. With limited practice time and many new upgrades, the Sprint race promises to be unpredictable and full of action.
