FORMULA 2: LAURENS VAN HOEPEN SNATCHES UNEXPECTED POLE IN CANADA

The Formula 2 qualifying session in Montreal delivered an unexpected scenario, with two red flags and a dramatic turnaround in the final minutes. At the end of the session, Laurens Van Hoepen secured a spectacular pole position.

At the halfway point of the session, Rafael Camara held provisional pole ahead of Nico Varrone and Laurens Van Hoepen.

Things were more complicated for the Rodin drivers, despite their strong pace in free practice. Alex Dunne was only P10, while Martinius Stenshorne was down in P18.

Two red flags late in the session

The session took a turn with 9 minutes to go when Ollie Goethe hit the wall, bringing out the first red flag.

Tasanapol Inthraphuvasak then made a mistake immediately after the restart at the end of the first sector, causing a second red flag.

After these interruptions, less than five minutes remained to improve. Laurens Van Hoepen delivered an outstanding lap to take pole position right at the end of the session.

He finished ahead of Rafa Camara and Alex Dunne, who managed to climb back up the order in the closing stages.

It is also worth noting Gabriele Mini’s 10th place, which puts him on pole position for the sprint race thanks to the reverse grid.

A qualifying session that promises thrilling races on a circuit the drivers are discovering this weekend, as Tsolov and Stenshorne close the top 5.
