LECLERC RETURNS TO VICTORY AFTER TWO YEARS WITH A DRAMATIC SILVERSTONE WIN
Charles Leclerc is finally back on the top step of the Formula 1 podium. After almost two years without a victory, the Ferrari driver delivered a flawless performance at Silverstone, winning a chaotic and action-packed British Grand Prix. The Monegasque showed incredible pace throughout the race, made no mistakes under pressure, and secured his first win of the 2026 season.
George Russell finished second after a difficult weekend for Mercedes, while Lewis Hamilton completed the podium in third place. The race was full of twists, with Kimi Antonelli losing a possible victory due to a technical problem and Max Verstappen crashing out late in the race, bringing out the Safety Car and creating a dramatic finish.
The British Grand Prix was the ninth round of the 2026 season and started with huge expectations after Kimi Antonelli dominated Saturday. The Italian driver won his first-ever Sprint race and claimed pole position for the main event, becoming the first Italian driver to take pole at Silverstone since 1953.
Ferrari also entered the race with confidence, with Leclerc starting second and Hamilton third. Mercedes drivers admitted that Ferrari looked extremely competitive throughout the weekend, making the Italian team a serious threat for victory.
All drivers started the race on Medium tyres, with Pirelli expecting most teams to complete the race with a one-stop strategy.
At the start, Ferrari immediately took control. Both Leclerc and Hamilton launched perfectly, passing Antonelli, who suffered a poor getaway. The two Ferraris moved into a provisional one-two, while George Russell remained fourth but struggled to keep up with the leading group.
Behind them, Max Verstappen quickly recovered from the early stages and moved into fifth place after overtaking Isack Hadjar. Meanwhile, Oscar Piastri suffered a difficult opening lap after damaging his front wing, forcing him into an early pit stop and dropping him to the back of the field.
Ferrari looked in complete control during the first part of the race, but Hamilton received a major setback when he was handed a five-second penalty for a false start. The penalty forced the home favourite to lose valuable time, and by lap 11 he was overtaken by Antonelli, who showed stronger race pace.
At the front, Leclerc continued to build a gap, creating more than four seconds between himself and the chasing pack. Verstappen, however, was unhappy with the balance of his Red Bull and complained over the radio about the lack of feeling from his RB22.
Despite his struggles, Verstappen managed to close the gap to Russell and passed the Mercedes driver on lap 17, moving into fourth place.
The strategy battle then began. Verstappen was the first frontrunner to stop for Hard tyres on lap 18, followed by his teammate one lap later. The move immediately improved his pace, allowing him to return to the fight.
Hamilton stopped on lap 24 to serve his penalty, losing time and narrowly missing the chance to stay ahead of Russell. Meanwhile, Antonelli remained on track longer, slowly reducing the gap to Leclerc and putting pressure on Ferrari.
The battle for victory became a fight between Leclerc and Antonelli. The Italian Mercedes driver continued to extend his first stint and closed the gap to the Ferrari, creating a tense battle separated by only tenths of a second.
Further back, Russell and Hamilton began closing in on Verstappen, creating a three-way fight for the podium. However, Russell suffered a setback when Mercedes detected a slow puncture, forcing him into an extra pit stop and dropping him out of the podium battle.
On lap 35, Antonelli finally stopped and returned to the track seven seconds behind Leclerc, giving the Ferrari driver back the race lead.
The battle behind remained intense, with Hamilton fighting Verstappen for third place. After a hard battle, the Ferrari driver eventually passed the Red Bull and moved onto the podium positions.
A Virtual Safety Car period arrived on lap 40 after Nico Hulkenberg suffered an engine problem and stopped his Audi at the side of the track. Verstappen used the opportunity to make another pit stop, hoping fresh tyres would help him recover in the final stages.
The final laps created complete chaos at Silverstone. Antonelli’s victory hopes disappeared when his Mercedes suffered a technical failure. A component became stuck in the front-left suspension area, forcing the Italian to return to the pits while his mechanics attempted repairs.
Despite the problem, Antonelli showed incredible determination and returned to the track, trying to finish the race and score points.
Then, with only five laps remaining, another major twist arrived. Verstappen lost control of his Red Bull while braking for the Stowe corner and ended his race in the gravel. The crash brought out the Safety Car and completely changed the ending of the Grand Prix.
During the Safety Car period, Ferrari decided to pit both cars for Soft tyres. Leclerc kept the lead, while Hamilton returned behind Russell, who stayed on track with used Medium tyres.
The Safety Car remained until the chequered flag, meaning the race ended without a final restart. Leclerc celebrated a long-awaited victory, returning to the top step of the podium after nearly two years.
Russell finished second after a challenging weekend, while Hamilton completed the podium and gained valuable points in the championship fight. Antonelli crossed the line ninth but lost more points after receiving a five-second penalty for track limits.
Lando Norris finished fourth, ahead of Isack Hadjar and the two Racing Bulls drivers Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad. Gabriel Bortoleto secured eighth place for Audi, while both Alpine cars finished inside the points.
