MCLAREN DELAYS DEBUT OF NEW MACARENA REAR WING
McLaren decided not to test its new low-drag rear wing during the Austrian Grand Prix weekend despite originally planning to run it on Lando Norris’ car at the Red Bull Ring.
The design is based on the so-called “Macarena” wing first introduced by Ferrari earlier this season. This concept rotates the entire flap to create a bigger reduction in drag and increase straight-line speed.
After carrying out final checks at the factory, McLaren engineers were not fully satisfied with how the system was working and chose to send the wing back to the factory for further development rather than lose valuable practice time trying to solve the issues on track.
Technical Director Neil Houldey explained that the wing was not behaving as expected during testing, making it too risky to use during a race weekend.
Lando Norris praised the concept and described it as an innovative idea, but admitted that such a complex system takes time to fully understand and develop.
With limited practice time available during Sprint weekends, McLaren is expected to delay the debut of the new wing until later in the season. It is not expected to appear at the British Grand Prix either.
